Key Components of a Lesson Plan
There are several key components that must be included in an effective lesson plan.
The first step is, of course, identifying yourself, and your co-teacher, the level of your students and the length of the class. These are the basics on the formal plan. On an informal lesson plan this information can be whittled down to just the class number. Once you know your classes well, you will automatically know the basic information of each class and so can then just use the class number for your reference.
The next step is to set out the objectives, and/or goals and information to be taught. In the formal lesson plan this includes heading like the key concept, objectives, pre-planning, guided practice, warm-up, anticipatory set, procedure, teaching, etc. This step is the most important part of your lesson plan. Listing the information to be taught and how to teach it, in detail will provide you with a framework on how to run your lesson.
In the informal lesson plan the above information is still required, but the amount of detail included is up to you. Some teachers just use the page numbers and attach the handouts to a quick written “order of events” page. It is imperative to know exactly what you are teaching, how you are teaching it, and what you are using to teach it, be visual aids, handouts or authentic materials.
